That retirement confirmed another semi-final place at a Grand Slam for Djokovic, who will now face 10th seed Gael Monfils in the final four – after his earlier straight sets win over Lucas Pouille, conqueror of Rafa Nadal in the fourth round.
Latest results from the 2016 US Open quarterfinal matches played on Tuesday, Sep 6, as No. 1 Novak Djokovic and Caroline Wozniacki advanced.
In the second quarterfinal, two times US Open finalist Caroline Wozniacki registered a comfortable 6-0, 6-2 straight sets victory over surprise quarterfinalist Anastasija Sevastova.
Djokovic, who holds a remarkable record of 164-1 after winning the first two sets at Grand Slams, extended that winning streak when Tsonga received treatment on his knee and just a few minutes later he was forced to shake hands with the Serb at the net during the first game of the third set.
World Number One Novak Djokovic cruised into the US Open semi-finals after his opponent Jo Wilfred Tsonga retired post hurting his left knee.
“I put myself in a position again to be one match away from the finals”.
The flamboyant 30-year-old is yet to drop a set in this tournament but he has struggled against Djokovic in the past, losing all of their last 12 meetings.
Tsonga took a medical timeout during the changeover at 5-2 of the second set and had the area below his left knee taped.
In contrast, Andy Murray will start his quarter-final today against Kei Nishikori having already played for nine and a half hours.
Tsonga said when he felt pain in his knee, he knew it was over.
Although Tsonga contributed to his own downfall with 19 unforced errors in the first set, Djokovic had good reason to be happy with his own game.
After a sequence of no-contests against exhausted or injured opponents, Djokovic has only 6hr 26min of court time on the clock – barely longer than one of his five-set battles with Rafael Nadal.
“I can only wish all of my opponents a speedy recovery”, Djokovic said after Tuesday’s match. It is the first time Monfils has reached the last-four of a Grand Slam, since the 2008 French Open.
“Especially on the hard court this year maybe he’s playing the best tennis he ever played”.
“It’s really all that I can do right now”.
“I love watching Gael”, Djokovic said.
In Women’s Singles, Angelique Kerber secured a semi-final berth beating Italian Roberta Vinci, 7-5, 6-0. It’s the first time Wozniacki has reached any Grand Slam semifinal in two years. The very next point as won by the 31-year-old as he broke back.

Monfils was in control throughout against the 22-year-old Pouille, who was coming off an epic fifth-set tiebreaker win over 14-time major victor Rafael Nadal.
