At a press conference in NY on Wednesday, Sony highlighted how the console could fully take advantage of 4K televisions by showing highly detailed scenes, all rendered in game engines.

On 7th September, Sony launched a pair of new PlayStation 4, including a deluxe version that is compatible with high dynamic range television. Even if you’re using your bog standard 1080p TV, PlayStation 4 Pro will deliver better frame rates and more detailed graphics.
The new console, named the PlayStation 4 Pro, features 4K gaming for the first time on any mainstream console.
Support for 4K streaming services such as Netflix and YouTube were also confirmed, but the biggest surprise is that the PS4 Pro will not include a 4K Blu-Ray player which was probably a factor to keep the price down.
I’m not sure Sony was ever trying to keep the PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro a secret, but today the consolemaker announced full technical specs, price, and release date for the new models. Andrew House, the president and global CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, encouraged developers to create games that could leverage 4K resolutions. All PS4 games will work on the regular console and the Pro alike, but PS4 Pro owners will be able to take advantage of higher resolution graphics. At 30% reduced size, the new model PS4 offers great value for the gamer and will also join the HDR revolution from next week.
Powering the Playstation 4 Pro is a new SoC from AMD.
PS4 Pro is an upgraded hardware PS4 that will feature forward and backwards compatibility with every PS4 game.

PlayStation 4 Pro is out in November, priced at €399. “If PlayStation VR is what everyone expects it to be, Sony will be the leader in game play virtual reality”. Sony says that supporting HDR doesn’t really tax the hardware all that much, and is more of an output support/interface issue than something that will be a drag on gaming performance.
