But now the world is mourning the passing of Lady Chablis. Club One stated if she wasn’t going to play herself in the movie, “there would not be one”.
According to Savannah Now, Club One, where she was a longtime performer, posted information about Chablis’ death on its Facebook page.
Berendt said Thursday that Chablis was the most popular.
The Lady Chablis first made an appearance in John Berendt’s book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and of course followed up with a role in the movie. “With her declining health, she regretted that her body wouldn’t allow her to give more”. But it frequently weaves its way through the rest of 1980s Savannah, chronicling characters from a voodoo priestess to the owner of University of Georgia Bullogs mascot, UGA, to Chablis herself. The book, and its movie adaption by Clint Eastwood in 1997, showcased Savannah’s history and charm and brought visitors to Savannah from all over the country for decades.
She was the headlining entertainer for Savannah Pride’s inaugural celebration, and hosted their Miss Gay Pride Pageant.

Chablis was also featured on Good Morning America, a Bizarre Foods segment, and even sat down for an interview with Oprah. A statement from Club One, where she still performed until her last days, says in part: “Just as The Book shined the spotlight on Savannah, so too did Chablis shine the spotlight on the gay scene, and especially on Club One”.
