Dr. Dre has also announced plans to donate royalties from his album to create a new arts and entertainment center for children.
“Straight Outta Compton” was well regarded by critics, averaging 89 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, but audiences liked it even better, giving it a solid A grade.
When asked about omitting that part of Dre’s life from the film, director F. Gary Gray said “we couldn’t fit everything into the movie”, and that they focused on stories that “served the narrative”, rather than “a lot of side stories”. Its total earnings now stand at US$157.5 million.
It’s also the best opening ever for a music biopic, according to Box Office Mojo, leaping past Johnny Cash drama Walk the Line’s $22.3 million launch in 2005, and performing on par with Eminem’s semi-autobiographical 8 Mile ($51.2 million) in 2002.
Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation took $17m (£10.8m), falling into second spot. And when the trailer hit we knew it was a guaranteed hit. That’s a particularly rough start considering that “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” cost a sizable $75 million to produce.
Exit polls showed audiences were evenly divided between genders, while 46% were African-American and 23% white. The 7 per cent who did turn out gave the film a favourable A- CinemaScore, and Goldstein hopes that word of mouth will spread in the coming weeks.
The stars of the film include Ice Cube’s son O’Shea Jackson Jr. who plays a younger version of his father.
“Straight Outta Compton’s” success overshadowed the weekend’s other new release, Warner Bros.’ “The Man From U.N.C.L.E“.
But its Universals weekend to celebrate once more in what has become a banner year for the studio.
