Dylan’s unique sculptures incorporate found objects including farm equipment, children’s toys, wheels, axes, cogs and even antique firearms. The folk legend has been working as a designer of wrought iron gates as a passion project and one of his pieces will now be displayed at the MGM National Harbor Casino.
Bob Dylan, the singer-songwriter whose career stretches back more than six decades, has won 11 Grammy Awards, and sold more than 100 million albums worldwide, is designing a large iron gate that visitors to the MGM National Harbor hotel and casino will walk under when the resort opens later this year.
Dylan’s sculpture will be among works from more than a dozen artists that will be displayed at MGM National Harbor.
“As a company founded upon entertainment, we’re truly inspired by artists who channel their energy into diverse paths”, MGM Resorts International Chief Executive Jim Murren said.
Bob Dylan is stepping out of the musical realm again to debut a new piece of sculpture.
Dylan’s welding work pays homage to America’s industrial core as well as his personal history. “I was born and raised in iron ore country”-Hibbing, Minn”. His art – from his lyrics – “The Times They Are a-Changin'” – to the discarded and often obsolete metal items he collects and welds – reflect a bygone era. Dylan’s plans for next year are unclear, though Mavis Staples recently told Rolling Stone he gave her a new song he wants to record with her at some point in the near future. Objects will range from large-scale sculptures and paintings to photography and LED light boxes, creating a rich visual experience.
According to a press release, the 26-foot by 15-foot iron archway, welded by Dylan himself, will serve as a “portal” to the billion dollar resort.
