Trump wants to expand military, minus fighting in foreign wars
Speaking to reporters in Laos, Obama said Thursday that Trump confirms his belief that Trump isn’t qualified to be president “every time he speaks” and added: “The most important thing for the public and the press is to just listen to what he says and follow up and ask questions to what appear to be either contradictory or uninformed or outright wacky ideas”. Mr Trump even cribbed one the former president’s favourite phrases, “peace through strength”, when explaining why he was in favour of across-the-board increases in U.S. military spending.
He accused Obama of wanting to reduce the size of the Army to 450,000 troops. He echoed late President Ronald Reagan in calling for “peace through strength”. His comments came in a foreign policy speech in Philadelphia.
Trump national spokesperson Katrina Pierson trashed the Dallas Morning News Wednesday, insisting the historically conservative paper is “liberal” after its editorial board opted to endorse Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.
“Please do not disrespect Gold Star families for you have not sacrificed anything for our freedoms”, said Sue Niederer, whose son was killed while serving in Iraq.
“We will make America strong again, we will make America safe again and we will make America great again”, said Trump, as he ended his speech. Trump did not give an overall cost estimate for his buildup. Other polls show Clinton’s lead has shrunk.
Though Trump comfortably earns the support of military-affiliated voters overall, Clinton is perceived more favorably on the use of nuclear weapons (44 percent) while a quarter of them said they would not trust either her or Trump to handle these issues.
With just two months until Election Day, national security has emerged as a centerpiece issue in the White House race.
“I had to ask myself, ‘What the hell does he think we’ve been trying to do for the last 14 years in terms of al Qaeda?'” Gen. Hertling said, adding that the proposal from Mr Trump shows a “complete lack of understanding of the threat and the ways to fight it”.
