Afghan soldiers inspects the site of suicide attack In Kabul near Afghanistan’s Defense Ministry, Monday, Sept. 5, 2016. The attack started off with a heavy explosion, which was thought to have been a vehicle bomb.
Gunfire erupted when four armed men stormed the building of the aid group Care in the Shar-e-Naw area following a auto bomb explosion.
“One terrorist was killed after detonating a auto bomb near Pamlarana, an NGO office building, late Monday and three attackers were killed by security forces during a counter-attack which ended Tuesday morning”, the ministry said in a statement.
The double bombing shook Afghan capital Kabul, killing 35 people and injuring more than 100 near the defence ministry in the early hours on Tuesday.
Out of fear of further attacks, the government put the whole area around the Defense Ministry, the Finance Ministry and the palace under lock down.
Officials say 24 people were killed and 91 wounded.
The attack on the CARE charity took place just hours after a devastating bombing in the bustling neighborhood near the Defense Ministry where first one bomb went off followed by a second suicide blast that killed numerous people that came to help. “Afghan Special Operation Forces were clearing the area”, the source told Xinhua news agency. 42 people, including 10 foreigners, were rescued, according to Sediqqi. It said the incident continued through to the early morning, “with damages sustained to the CARE compound”.
A spokeswoman for Care based in the United Kingdom said that its compound was damaged but all staff were safe and accounted for.
Security forces had blocked all the roads leading to Shar-e Now.
The detonation of the second set of explosives was a deliberate attempt to kill emergency personnel who had arrived at the site of the initial explosion – a tactic commonly employed by the Taliban and other terrorist organizations. The death toll had risen considerably overnight.
At least five people, including four attackers and a civilian, were killed as a guest house in Shahr-i-Naw neighbourhood of Afghanistan’s Kabul city was attacked on Tuesday, media reports said.
It shook the capital just hours after high-level officials, including an army general, were killed in the twin blasts near the defence ministry, as the Taliban ramp up their nationwide offensive against the US-backed government.
