ITT Tech Abruptly Closes; Students Without a School

The for-profit ITT Technical Institute closed its schools across the country Tuesday, affecting some 3,200 OH students at nine campuses across the state.

In late last month, the Department of Education blocked ITT Tech from taking any new students who use federal financial aid.

The move means about 40,000 students are now going to have to find another school to attend.

ITT Educational Services Inc., the parent company of ITT Tech, on Tuesday announced the closure of all of its 130 ITT Tech locations in 38 states after the Department of Education issued sanctions against the for-profit educator. Ryan Ogrodnik, dean of enrollment services at EGCC, says they know that ITT students have put time, money and energy into earning academic credits.

Nationwide, there are 43,000 students enrolled at campuses in 38 states, and is the among the largest for-profit college chains in the United States, reporting $850 million in revenue past year.

“It’s hard for me to feel sad for me, but I’m thinking, these students that have to start over”, she said. “We’ve reached out specifically to ITT, and in fact, we have the director of our Niles campus heading to the South Bend campus to hopefully have some discussions there or get a little more information about what the students may need”.

That statement also points out that if students enroll at other schools that will accept their credits, they likely won’t have federal loans wiped clean.
