Park Asks ASEAN to Oppose North Korea’s Nuclear and Missile Provocations
Even after receiving global warnings and appeals, North Korea has proceeded to engage in provocative acts such as its launch of the three mid-range Rodong ballistic missiles on Monday and a test-firing of a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) on August.

VIENTIANE, Laos-President Barack Obama said China needs to do more to work “more effectively” with the U.S.to deter the threat of North Korea, including tightening sanctions on Pyongyang. The new resolution promises “further significant measures” for North Korea’s defiance, but at the ASEAN Summit that followed the G20, President Obama and South Korean President Park Geun-hye stressed rigorous implementation of the last set of sanctions, issued last March, and said they would both talk with China about closing loopholes.

Seoul has been cautious not to step into the increasingly sensitive territorial dispute. However, the calls for the country to take actions in protecting sea lanes of communication on high seas due to the fact that its export-reliant economy is highly dependent on maritime trading routes.
