The U.S. Department of Education is holding a series of webinars for students who were attending ITT Technical Institute when it abruptly closed this week. Sherrod Brown explains, they can transfer their credits to continue their education at another college.

“There’s a number of programs that are comparable”, O’Brien said.

Students at 140 campuses across the country learned Tuesday that ITT would not begin classes as scheduled, but was closing down in the face of federal sanctions targeting its recruitment practices, including promises about enrollees’ job prospects. If they or recent ITT students have federal loans for the program, they may be eligible for loan discharge, according to a blog post by John B. King Jr., the U.S. Secretary of Education. Some of them could get into mid-semester course sections at SMC starting in October, or possibly earlier.

While Ivy Tech will not accept ITT credits, it is working to develop options for ITT students. The government has previously stated that the college was “out of compliance”, and the subject of state and federal investigations.

Apply for a loan discharge, which would in effect wipe out their federal student debt.

ITT also has a campus in Baton Rouge. That’s an estimated $500 million worth of loans, a cost that would be covered by taxpayers and $90 million in insurance that ITT previously paid the department. The closure puts about 35,000 students in limbo as they try and figure out plans for the future.

Wednesday at 10 a.m. (EST) a webinar will be held to help students with unanswered questions.
