Police are investigating after a loaded gun was found on a student in Brooklyn on the first day of school in New York City.
The unidentified teen was discovered with a.22-caliber pistol in his backpack around 9:45 a.m. when it set off the alarm in the metal-detector scanner. However, the nearby Prospect Heights Educational Complex, which holds four schools, recorded a city-high 17 incidents of arrests, summonses or juvenile reports.
“It’s beyond troubling that just minutes into the new school year, yet another gun was brought into an NYC public school”, said Jeremiah Kittredge, CEO of Families for Excellent Schools. “The NYPD immediately responded and safely confiscated the weapon”. “This is not a good start”, said Floyd. “How many weapons are in the schools that don’t have metal detectors this year right now as we speak on the first day?” The DOE and NYPD will review individual school safety data and work with school officials to determine whether metal detectors should be removed, added, or used part-time at each school. Floyd said. “That’s a fighting thing to think about”.
