State Counselor to Attend Asean Summit in Laos

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday left the national capital for Laos to attend the 14th India-Asean Summit and the 11th East Asia Summit.

The 28th ASEAN Summit will discuss ASEAN Community building efforts, especially the implementation of the ASEAN Community Vision 2025, while the 29th ASEAN Summit will focus on ASEAN’s external relations and future direction as well as exchange of views on regional and global issues of common concern.

Prime Minister Modi exchanged views with Obama on the sidelines of the G20 summit in China’s Hangzhou on Sunday, with the United States president praising the “bold policy” move on GST reform in a “difficult” global economic scenario.

The ASEAN+1 Summits and ASEAN+3 Summit will review cooperation between the ten-member bloc and its dialogue partners.

According to the organising board, during the 28th Summit, ASEAN leaders will discuss measures to tighten relations within the ASEAN Community and the realisation of the ASEAN Vision 2025 and future orientations.

The India-Asean summit will be attended by the leaders of 10 southeast Asian nations – Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam and Thailand.

Laos is the third and last leg of Park’s eight-day trip that also took her to Russian Federation and China.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang said Wednesday that practical cooperation between ASEAN members and China, Japan and South Korea should be promoted steadily so as to safeguard regional peace and stability.

Indian Ambassador to ASEAN Suresh Kumar Reddy told the media that the ASEAN summit is expected to set the agenda for further strengthening the ties which will help Indiato achieve its objectives for Socio-Economic Growth. Bilateral cooperation has entered into a period of maturity and needs to be upgraded.

Modi leaves for Laos
