Speedo and Misfit team up on length-tracking swimming wearable

But if you swim competitively, the Speedo Shine has the potential to genuinely enhance your training routine, and your performance in the pool.

Speedo has teamed up with Misfit to dip its toes into the world of activity tracking.

If you’re a jogger or a marathon runner, you have plenty of fitness trackers to choose from that can count your calories, your heart rate, distance ran, and where you’ve ran. But it can either confirm and deny afterwards whether you have the focus to perform very basic maths while exercising. Proprietary lap counting algorithms embedded in the device’s firmware track a swimmer’s lap count with industry-leading accuracy and work for all stroke types. That, combined with the fact that the Misfit devices are popular with swimmers, led the company to develop Speedo Shine.

This absence of a fine-tuned counter might be a welcome change for those exhausted of zealous activity trackers that needle them over every step, but it’s not clear if this lack of accuracy might also apply (in a less welcome fashion) to the Speed Shine’s performance in the pool.

Syncing data to the Misfit iOS and Android apps, you’ll be able to view information on swim distance, calories burned and it’ll utilise same points scoring system as Misfit’s other trackers. And while the water resistant Apple Watch with non-leather bands plays nice with some water, Speedo Shine is made with swimmers in mind and waterproofed to 50 meters. The $80 Speedo Shine will be available exclusively from SpeedoUSA.com and the Apple Store starting September.

The Speedo Shine comes in a brand new and previously unheard of colour developed by the company called “pure”. While that’s all done through the Misfit app, the swimming features are accessed via a new Speedo Fit app. This device will also work with a wide variety of additional accessories available through Misfit.
