Sony launches new version of PlayStation 4

Additionally, Sony will make an upgrade available that will enable all 40 million users of its PlayStation 4 console to upgrade to HDR, House said. Cerny himself noted during the announcement yesterday that rendering at 4K resolutions on consoles will be a challenge in 2016.

The higher-end console will shine on 4K TVs, but it also adds HDR support and enhanced graphical quality for HDTVs.

Additionally, the company unveiled a slimmer, lighter and more energy efficient version of its PlayStation 4 Console, which will come out September 15 and will cost $299. Various tidbits, like a lightly redesigned controller and 5Ghz Wi-Fi support seem to be a part of this unit, too.

This is not surprising, and will likely be the case for many – if not the majority – of games running on PS4 Pro.

Called the PlayStation 4 Pro, the system will be capable of playing on 4K – or ultra-high resolution – and on HDR televisions.

Activision’s incoming Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare was even announced as taking advantage of the extra horsepower the Pro affords when it launches in November. It should also benefit PlayStation VR, allowing games to run more smoothly. How can you get it? Assuming this was all running on an actual PS4 Pro, that’d be potentially impressive. Still, based on what we saw, the bump to 4K brings out a load of extra detail in PS4 games, and some titles will be specifically created to use more of the Pro’s upgraded GPU to pump out even more glossy effects all the while.

Highly professional video game console.

In addition, a YouTube 4K app will be available. Notably, the Pro will not have a 4K blu-ray drive. I could see myself going down this route simply due to forward momentum on these technologies, but. At least it ships with 1TB of storage in it? Sony made it a point to emphasize 4K streaming, but it looks like 4K Blu-ray is out. Not as much as you might think!
