Donald Trump vows massive increase in US military spending

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump speaks to the Conservative Party of New York Presidential Convention on Wednesday.

Their refusal to endorse Donald Trump is the first time the paper hasn’t endorsed the Republican presidential candidate in 52 years, since they sat out endorsing either candidate in 1964.

Later, Blitzer asked Graham whether Trump owes President Barack Obama an apology for the birther controversy he’s fueled.

Speaking from the tarmac at the airport in her hometown of White Plains, Clinton laid into Trump for those comments and for praising Russian leader Vladimir Putin during a Wednesday night joint town hall.

“If he says great things about me, I’m going to say great things about him”, Trump said.

Donald Trump will call for eliminating the sequester on defense spending and bolstering the US’ defenses by proposing a “major investment” in USA military spending in a speech Wednesday morning, his campaign announced Tuesday.

Asked about sexual assault cases within the USA military, Trump said those cases should be tried in military courts.

The appearances mark an intense, two-day focus on national security by Trump, who has offered tough rhetoric – but few details – on America’s challenges overseas.

Earlier this week, Mr Trump was endorsed by 88 former military leaders in an open letter, who declared the Republican nominee “has the temperament to be commander-in-chief”.

Since the candidates never met face-to-face, the event felt like a dress rehearsal of sorts ahead of the presidential debates, the first of which will be later this month.

He also suggested he would shake up the military’s top ranks if he wins in November, saying there would probably be “different generals”.

Trump, in turn, criticised the Obama administration as pursuing “the dumbest foreign policy” he had ever seen.

Retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn on Thursday said Donald Trump does have “enormous respect” for US military leadership, while also backing up Mr. Trump’s comments Wednesday evening that he didn’t see great body language from intelligence officials in recent briefings.

Also on Wednesday, Clinton’s campaign announced that 95 retired generals and admirals have endorsed her presidential bid, one day after a group of 88 retired generals and admirals signed an open letter backing Trump to reverse the “hollowing out” of the United States military.

“I make no excuses for it”, she said.

Among voters overall, a smaller majority (52 per cent) said they would not be confident in her ability to serve. Lauer surely knew this, and he surely could have brought up interviews where Trump said he supported the war. When asked if he was shocked by anything he heard, Trump said Obama, Clinton and Secretary of State John Kerry did the opposite of what intelligence experts told them.

Trump’s Union League address also included his plans to eliminate deep spending cuts, known as the “sequester”, enacted when Congress failed to reach a budget compromise in 2011.

He said he would also seek budget reforms, attrition in the federal work force, root out inefficiencies in government spending and collect billions of dollars in unpaid taxes by Americans.

Despite making support for the military a signature issue in his campaign, Mr Trump has at various times drawn criticism from military members.
