Cricket Wireless launching new $30 smartphone plan on September 9
Low-priced carrier Cricket Wireless has come out with a new data plan that’s aimed at customers who want a bit more mobile data without having to spend a small fortune every month on their phone bill. The plan will go live tomorrow, September 9th, and will include unlimited talk and text across the U.S. With the major carriers in the country recently unveiling new unlimited data plans, pre-paid carriers are looking for ways to retain their customers by announcing plans that will allow them to remain competitive with the major carriers.

Cricket Wireless is introducing a new monthly plan that will offer 1GB of LTE data for just $30. After you use that 1GB, your data speeds will drop to 128Kbps. The next step up, Cricket’s Basic plan, is $40 a month ($35 a month if you enroll in Cricket’s automatic bill pay) for a 2.5GB of data. The carrier will be adding a new plan this week that will pit itself against Project Fi, but that doesn’t mean we should jump right away. It competes directly with Google’s Project Fi which also offers unlimited talk and text with 1GB of LTE data. Ultra Mobile’s cheapest plan includes unlimited talk and text, and 1GB of 4G LTE for $29, plus unlimited worldwide texting and calling to 71 countries.

Although Cricket offers more devices on its plan compared to Project Fi, there are two big benefits as to why someone should look at Project Fi as a solid option. New customers are eligible for a free handset of their choosing: the Alcatel STREAK, ZTE Sonata 3, or Kyocera Hydro View.
