An elderly Chicago man was shot in broad daylight during a robbery while he watered his lawn -and his neighbor’s surveillance camera happened to catch the cruel crime on video.

It was a little after 11 a.m. on Tuesday when the victim, Fred Laguardia, was approached by two suspects on bikes outside his home in Marquette Park.

The robber then searched Mr LaGuardia’s pockets and took his wallet. Police said he is in fair condition. “He is doing better”, neighbor Lois Walker said, ABC News reported Thursday.

This is the latest attack in Chicago’s deadliest summer in two decades, and community activists and members of the public are outraged.

“It’s absolutely ridiculous. I mean, you’re not even safe in your own yard”, added neighbor Teryeyah Griggs.

6,000 illegal guns have been taken off the streets, but still, 500 people have been killed this year in Chicago – far more than the total for all of 2015. Almost 230 homicides occurred over the summer alone.

“It’s not a police issue. It’s as simple as that”, Eddie Johnson said. “You show me a man that doesn’t have hope, I’ll show you on that’s willing to pick up a gun and do anything with it”.

There is a $1000 reward being offered to anyone who can provide information that leads to an arrest and charges.
