Having already won January’s Australian Open, he and Soares can claim a second Grand Slam if they now beat Spanish opposition, either Feliciano and Marc Lopez or Pablo Carrena Busta and Guillermo Garcia Lopez.
Partner Soares added: “They’re the best team this year, defending champions, playing an awesome level, but I thought we did extremely well”.
“We served well and I think we played really well under pressure, which at this stage of the tournament is important”.
Murray and Soares broke early in the set and held on despite intense pressure on nearly every service game, then broke again to wrap up the match 7-5 4-6 6-3.

The Briton recovered his focus, however, converting a break point with a crisp forehand volley after Mahut had double faulted at 2-2.
