Latvia’s Sevastova beats Konta to reach US Open last eight

Pouille never had been to a Grand Slam quarterfinal until Wimbledon a couple of months ago, but it was Nadal who blinked at 6-6. The trio that time was Jean Borotra, Jacques Brugnon and Rene Lacoste, all members of France’s famed “Four Musketeers” group of tennis stars in the 1920s and 1930s.

Sevastova, who also beat third seed Garbine Muguruza in the second round in NY, overcame nerves and a late fightback from Konta to win, despite missing a match point at both 5-3 and 5-4 in the second set.

In 2016, he lost in the first round of the Australian Open.

Konta trailed 4-1 in the second set and saved two match points en route to levelling at 5-5 but Sevastova broke serve to win on her third match point.

He dropped on his back, his tongue sticking out.

The seventh-seeded Italian will face off the victor of the all-left handed matchup between second-seed Angelique Kerber and 14 seed Petra Kvitova later tonight.

Sock, the last man from the United States left in the draw, was trying to reach his first major quarterfinal. Murray meets Grigor Dimitrov in the fourth round on Monday, while Edmund faces Novak Djokovic, the world No 1 and defending champion, in the final match in Arthur Ashe Stadium on Sunday evening. She has played 18 matches in less than two months, winning nearly 80 per cent of them, but Sunday felt like a stop too far. Baghdatis defended himself to the chair umpire by asking whether it was against the rules to check the time; later, speaking to a handful of reporters, he said he was trying to message his wife.

Wozniacki is a two-time runner-up at Flushing Meadows, but she is unseeded and ranked only 74th after a season filled with injuries and poor results. I have won four matches here.

Anastasija Sevastova was so unknown when she arrived at the U.S. Open that even the official website could not find a photo of her. Wozniacki is playing very good defense, moving extremely well and making little to no unforced errors.

Gael Monfils’ sizzling summer rolls on with a quarterfinal run at the U.S. Open.

Three days after his 30th birthday, there were still classic Monfils moments in this one, including an attempt to tie his shoe in the middle of a point.

There were no nerves this time, around, with Sevastova holding comfortably to go just two games away from recording another upset.

British number one Johanna Konta has been knocked out of the US Open fourth round by Anastasija Sevastova. Sevastova, who returned to competition past year after retiring in 2013 following a succession of injuries, had never gone beyond the second round in her three previous visits to Flushing Meadows, the last of which was in 2011.

It was the 71 percent overall points that they won frst serve which made the overall difference. However, the Latvian responded well by using some crafty tennis to secure an opening hold, and similar tennis in the next game saw Sevastova secure the opening break of the match.

In Konta’s second-round match, the Australian Open semifinalist had collapsed to the court with trouble breathing, but she said there weren’t any significant lingering issues Sunday.

“I know it’s tough to repeat again the same results of previous year, but I’m in the quarterfinal”.

It is a measure of Konta’s progress over the last year that a last-16 Grand Slam exit feels like a disappointment, but this was a real missed chance for the Briton who was aiming for her second Grand Slam semi-final of the year and a top 10 ranking. Exhausted after the match, she had tears in her eyes.
