Nebraska Doesn’t Send Out Punter, Takes Penalty in Memory of Sam Foltz

The Huskers’ punter tragically passed away earlier this summer when he was involved in a auto crash that also took the life of former Michigan State special teamer Mike Sadler. Foltz, who was killed in a tragic auto accident in Wisconsin prior to the start of fall camp, was the Big Ten Punter of the Year in 2015. The Huskers have spent much of the last two months coping with his loss while also striving to live in honor of Foltz’s memory.

Prior to Saturday night’s season opener, Fresno State head coach Tim DeRuyter tweeted, “Had an quake here this am to wake us”.

Devine Ozigbo ran for 103 yards and two touchdowns as the Huskers ran the ball on 51 of their 64 offensive plays.

Saluting their fallen teammate, the Huskers took a delay-of-game on fourth-and-3.

Riley and his program in the past six weeks have mourned the death of punter Sam Foltz in a vehicle accident and have had to deal with the fallout of receivers coach Keith Williams’ arrest for third-offense drunken driving.

Since Carr left, Fresno State’s two-year record is 9-17. Quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr. couldn’t control the tears.

“I think we all understand the emphasis”, Riley said.

Bryant finished Nebraska’s third touchdown drive of the fourth quarter with a three-yard run to cap a 10-play, 67-yard drive in 4:03, giving the Huskers a 43-10 lead after Spencer Lindsay’s extra point.

All that holding true, Fresno State head coach Tim DeRuyter started more quarterbacks previous year (four) than he won games (three). Armstrong also has Jordan Westerkamp back at receiver as well as leading rusher Terrell Newby.

Nay: It’s going to be a work in progress for true freshman Caleb Lightbourn, but you do expect some blocking for him. “A little more versatile for the long spell of the season”, the Husker head coach continued. Kroening knocked home a 26-yard field goal to leave Fresno State trailing 14-10 as time expired. If that happens – as we saw past year with Nebraska in close games – all bets are off.

He later played catch with Foltz’s nephews on the sidelines, smiling as they threw their body weight into passes. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. and the game will be televised on ESPN 2.

‘The young men in our football program are hurting but I know that their strength of character and resolve will bring us together and we will honor Sam every day moving forward, ‘ Riley said.
