Putin-Obama meeting went well, “work will continue”

That reflects a recognition that economic strains are fueling political tensions and a growing clamor to raise barriers against foreign competition.

The Apple tax order came in the midst of statements from both Germany and France that negotiations over the free trade agreement between the European Union and the U.S., the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), have little chance of being concluded. He said previous tax orders have affected European companies, including a January ruling that covered 35 companies, a lot of them from Europe. They appealed for stepped up aid for surging global numbers of refugees and their host countries.

ON a chilly, wet day in early winter of 2008, leaders of the world’s 20 major economies gathered at the height of the global financial crisis in downtown Washington. It is the premier forum for global economic cooperation.

China had made trade a theme of the meeting in the lakeside city of Hangzhou, southwest of Shanghai, even as it faces complaints that a flood of low-priced steel exports are threatening USA and European jobs, fueling demands for trade curbs.

The official said the two leaders also had discussions on cyber security but did not provide additional details about the scope of the conversation.

As a result, China’s steel producers have found it easier to export their surplus steel, triggering outrage in both the USA and Europe, both of which have imposed hefty anti-dumping duties on Chinese steel.

China, the world’s biggest steel producer, has committed to reducing its production capacity by 100 to 150 million tons by 2020, a pledge Xi repeated Saturday.

According to the communique, “We also recognise that subsidies and other types of support from government or government-sponsored institutions can cause market distortions and contribute to global excess capacity and therefore require attention”. At the same time, a European leader highlighted the conflicts looming over the summit by calling for action on China’s bloated steel industry.

Mrs May said she had asked the Russian leader to do all he could to end the bombing of civilians in Syria.

In his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Obama raised disputes over cyberwarfare, maritime aggression and human rights.

In the wake of the global financial crisis of 2008, the G20 group of countries, covering 85 percent of the world economy, became the main worldwide economic forum.

Xi proposed that the summit should strengthen coordination of macro-economic policies, facilitate economic expansion worldwide, safeguard financial stability, make innovations on growth patterns, tap new potential, optimize global economic governance and make institutional improvements.

Obama’s visit started on a high note, with the U.S and China consummating their unlikely partnership on climate change by announcing they were both entering the global emissions-cutting deal reached previous year in Paris. -European pact have slowed or stalled, while Britain is wrestling with the effects of its June vote to leave the EU and other economies, including Russian Federation and Nigeria, are in recession.

“I would say it is hard for the G-20 to come up with a coordinated action plan because numerous countries are caught up in domestic issues”, Biswas said. “And Obama’s coming down a metal staircase, probably was built in China, wasn’t built here”.

But there is disagreement over why another staircase, which the USA ships in to use with the plane, was not used in the first place, as normally happens when an American President travels to foreign countries.

North Korea reportedly fired three ballistic missiles off its east coast Monday in its latest show of force, some two weeks after it test-fired a submarine-launched ballistic missile.

A prickly state-run media outlet in China has criticized the Western press for “arrogance” in the way it covered the airport fracas+ that occurred when US President Barack Obama arrived in Hangzhou last week.

China has previously warned against Seoul’s decision to base the U.S. Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD, system south of the South Korean capital, Seoul.

At a joint ceremony, Xi said it “speaks to the shared ambition and resolve of China and the United States in addressing global issues”.

While Seoul and Washington say the system is intended exclusively to defend against North Korea’s missile threat, Beijing says it will allow the US military to peer deep into northeastern China.
