Watch the First Trailer for Ben Affleck’s Live by Night

It’s an adaptation of Dennis Lehane’s novel Live By Night (Lehane was the source inspiration for Affleck’s directorial debut, the excellent Gone, Baby, Gone). The director’s Argo follow-up has been a long time (i.e. basically an entire Presidential term) coming, which makes its having almost been completed a pleasant surprise. Now that appears to have been confirmed with the first trailer for the 1920s crime thriller making its way online.

The Oscar victor showcases a full Boston accent to play Joe Coughlin, a cop’s son who has gone to the dark side. Live by Night also stars Zoe Saldana, Sienna Miller, Chris Cooper, Brendan Gleeson, Chris Messina and Elle Fanning.

Warner Bros. has released the first full-length trailer for Live by Night, a dramatic crime thriller directed, written and starring Oscar victor Ben Affleck (Justice League, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice).

Throughout the years, Ben Affleck has proven time and time again that not only is he a talented actor, but that he may be an even better director. The opportunity to gain power and money is there for any man with enough ambition and nerve and Joe Coughlin, the son of the Boston Police Superintendent, long ago turned his back on his strict upbringing for the spoils of being an outlaw. However, Coughlin makes a big mistake when he steals a powerful mob boss’s money and girlfriend, according to the movie’s website.

After Gone Baby Gone, he went on to direct and star in The Town, which was also extremely well-received by many.

“The fiery affair ends in tragedy, setting [Coughlin] on a path of revenge, ambition, romance and betrayal that propels him out of Boston and up the ladder of Tampa’s steamy rum-running underworld”, the site says.

While the trailer for Live by Night definitely looks intense, it’s hard not to laugh at Affleck’s ridiculous fedora.
