Arizona’s largest shipping port in Nogales was partly closed Thursday after USA federal agents opened fire on a man who tried to ram them, officials said.

There was a passenger in the vehicle who was also hurt, but should be OK.

A Border Patrol agent and Office of Field Operations officers fired their weapons at the driver, who sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was airlifted a Tucson-area hospital. No officers or agents were injured.

It was unclear what the investigation was focused on, but Fierros said the crossing would be closed to southbound traffic for the remainder of the day. As a result, southbound traffic lanes through the Mariposa Crossing have been temporarily closed. The shooting is being investigated by an internal affairs agency and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Fierros says the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol asked the Nogales Police Department to assist with securing the border.
