7 arrested after #BlackLivesMatter protest at London airport

In a statement, BLMUK said the protest was aimed at highlighting the economic disparity between the users of the airport and the people who lived in east London where it is based.

A group of nine protesters had locked themselves to a tripod they had erected on the runway, the Metropolitan Police said in a statement issued later Tuesday.

It was not clear how the protesters accessed the runway, which is situated next to the River Thames and surrounded by fencing.

Police were unable to remove the protesters, and the airport is now closed for take-offs and landings.

Black Lives Matter UK has taken its inspiration from a similar movement in the U.S. which has arisen from the number of black people shot and killed by police.

London City Airport announced around noon local time that they had resumed operations.

The group Black Lives Matter claimed responsibility on social media.

BLMUK further said just a “small elite” is able to fly, while thousands of refugees die or go missing in the Mediterranean Sea.

Black Lives Matter, the global activist phenomenon has today occupied the runway at London City Airport.

The Telegraph reported that police had made seven arrests, but only two protesters had been removed from the runway.

London City Airport travelers were met with delays Tuesday as flights were temporarily stopped because of a Black Lives Matter protest.

The demonstration resulted in all flights in and out of the airport being cancelled, delayed or diverted.

“People need to understand that the effects of climate change are most felt by the people least responsible for them”.

Pictures show a group of the protesters on the airport tarmac.

Its statement said: “We note that the United Kingdom is willing to charter special flights to remove black people from the country based on their immigration status”.

London City Airport is popular with bankers and business people due to its close proximity to the capital’s financial district.

It took four hours to remove the individuals and reopen the runway.
