Patrick Reed ousts Rickie Fowler to win The Barclays at Bethpage
Reed holed a 12-foot birdie putt on the next hole for a two-shot lead, and Fowler never got any closer.

Blasting 2-iron and 3-wood off the driving holes on the tree-lined course, the long-hitting Jutanugarn birdied the par-5 seventh and par-3 eighth to get to 19 under, then pulled away with birdies on the par-5 12th, par-4 14th, par-3 15th and par-5 18th. Reed went on to win the tournament.
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (AP) Patrick Reed picked up two victories in one day. He was the guy on the bubble, and most of the chatter was negative.
Even more aggravating to Reed was that it was his own fault.
The American had developed the consistency he needed.
The 30-year-old former Michigan State coach made $144,000 to jump from 30th to fourth on the money list with $281,808 and earn a PGA Tour card as top-25 finisher.
Reed had also been hampered in recent months by missing one piece from the proverbial puzzle. “I’ll be in a good spot”. “So now, I finally get to play for the United States in the United States and I can not wait to see how the fans are, and just have the whole crowd on our side this time”, added the 26-year-old. The moment couldn’t be better for his confidence.
Reed was able to make a few mistakes on the run in and still claim an important victory.
Eight Americans qualify automatically * Reed one of five returning from 2014 * Fowler, Watson miss out NEW YORK, Aug 28 (Reuters) – Patrick Reed clinched a spot on the American Ryder Cup team when he won The Barclays on Sunday and immediately set his sights on gaining “sweet revenge” when the USA take on Europe in five weeks’ time. “We’re going to go out there to try to get a W, and try to get hardware and try to get a trophy”.
Reed’s camp is a close-knit one; his wife, Justine, used to caddie for him and still walks with him every round.
Patrick Reed, who is now ranked 14th in the world, has four PGA tour victories to his name. “I tried to make the team just like everybody else and I didn’t make it”.
That guy was Tiger Woods, whom Reed grew up idolizing to the point that he prefers to wear black pants and a red shirt in the final group.
Reed couldn’t help but think about all the missed chances in the opening hour – four putts from 10 feet or in that failed to drop, including an 8-foot eagle attempt. “It wasn’t a US Open but it was nearly like one”, he said of the tough layout. The caution gave him another shot, though, and he took advantage.
“I’m just trying to win the tournament”, Fowler said when asked if he knew where he stood. “To get over that hump and put the pedal down”.
Canada’s Alena Sharp had the best result of her LPGA Tour career, birdieing the final two holes for a 67 to finish fourth at 16 under.
Reed finished at nine-under 275 for a one-stroke victory over Sean O’Hair (66) and Argentina’s Emiliano Grillo (69), who tied for second.
Fowler still could have made the Ryder Cup team with a birdie on the 18th hole. Reed moved into first place in the FedExCup standings (3,575 points) after entering the week in seventh.

The Ryder Cup will take place September 30-Oct. He finished two shots behind second place, knowing a finish in the top-two would have guaranteed his place in his first Ryder Cup on American soil.
