Cooperation with India on nuclear safety, security possible, says foreign secretary was posted in National of TheNews International – https://www.thenews.com.pk on September 09, 2016 and was last updated on September 09, 2016. He stated that the Pakistan’s nuclear program is only for defence objective.

“Terrorists have never attempted to harm the programme”, he was quoted as saying.

Aizaz said as a peaceful country Pakistan has always voiced its desire for strategic stability and urges all regional partners to utilize resources for economic development instead of furthering nuclearization in the region that in turn usher insecurity in the region.

He said Pakistan is a staunch advocate of nuclear non-proliferation at global level and believes in an amicable solution of all disputes.

Another nuclear expert Dr Adil Sultan, while speaking about Indian Cold Start Doctrine’s (CSD) influence on Pakistan’s decision to introduce battlefield nuclear weapons said Indians tried to exploit the “perceived” gap below Pakistan’s nuclear threshold.

Both the countries already have an agreement on nuclear accidents and an expert group on nuclear confidence building measures.

With Washington’s efforts to stymie Pakistan’s nuclear programme not paying dividends, experts advised United States lawmakers to instead opt for an alternative approach of arms control while terming support for India’s NSG membership as “problematic”.

Opponents argue that granting it membership would further undermine efforts to prevent proliferation.

He opined that India was disinterested in Pakistani proposal for nuclear restraint regime due to its advantageous position in the conventional arms sphere.
