Sam Allardyce on Wayne Rooney: His England experience makes him indispensable
Rooney was deployed in midfield in Sunday’s World Cup qualifying win over Slovakia with Allardyce admitting his skipper had dropped deeper than anticipated as England searched for their last-gasp victor.

To his surprise, Bohunicky found the England playing shirt of Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling and captain’s armband of Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney.
Harry Kane is not now the domineering number nine England need and want him to be, Raheem Sterling did not bring his Manchester City form with him to Trnava and Jordan Henderson failed to take his chance in the centre.
The Slovaks were forced to play the final 33 minutes with 10 men after Martin Skrtel was sent off having received two yellow cards, both for fouls against forward Harry Kane.
Despite the lingering fall-out from the Iceland result, which prompted his predecessor Roy Hodgson’s immediate resignation, Allardyce said his players were “a happy bunch, not a damaged bunch”.
“I think that he holds a lot more experience at worldwide football than me as an global manager”.
But Allardyce said: “This is the most decorated outfield player in England”.
It was also the squad’s first game with new manager Sam Allardyce in charge, who will be relieved to secure the win.
“We keep plugging away and I thought as a unit we played brilliantly”, said Lallana.
“I didn’t want to talk about fear ― I wanted to be positive and tell them what the future is”. “I saw a little nervous tension”.
Allardyce has warned Rooney that he needs to start scoring goals.
New England manager Sam Allardyce got his England career off to the ideal start as Adam Lallana scored an injury time victor, against the 10 men of Slovakia who had former Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel sent off for a crude stamp on Harry Kane.
“Using his experience with a team and playing as a team member, it’s not for me to say where he’s going to play”.
