Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said on Monday that he hopes to finally demo a butler powered by artificial intelligence next month after making it his New Year’s challenge to build the service.

The chief executive of the social media site and his wife, Priscilla Chan, were granted a personal invitation to the Vatican to meet the Pope during their sojourn in Italy.

Zuckerberg, who is renowned for his uniform grey t-shirts, even dressed for the occasion, donning a dark suit and tie, while Chan looked demure in a black, knee-length dress.

Writing about the experience in a Facebook post, Zuckerberg made parallels between the Pope’s mission of “communicating” with people around the world and his company’s goal of providing internet access to underserved regions.

Zuckerberg was in the area for a Facebook Q&A in Rome on Monday and expressed his condolences for those dealing with the aftermath of last week’s deadly natural disaster in the country.

To show his commitment to the cause of alleviating poverty, Zuck gave the Pope a scale model of Facebook’s Aquila solar-powered, #internet-sharing drone.

It was a busy day for the billionaire, who attended an audience with Pope Francis alongside his wife, Priscilla, earlier on Monday morning. “We gave him a model of Aquila, our solar-powered aircraft that will beam internet connectivity to places that don’t have it”.

The Aquila drone, which has a wingspan of over 113 feet – bigger than a Boeing 737 – just completed its first official test flight this summer. “But we want to do what we can, working alongside many others”, Zuckerberg and Chan added.

Twiplomacy, a study of the Twitter accounts of world leaders and their retweet rates, declared the pope “by far the most influential” world leader on Twitter.

Over the weekend, Zuckerberg posted an update and photo from the wedding of Spotify co-founder Daniel Ek, which was held near Lake Como in northern Italy.

Many company watchers have wondered about Facebook’s intentions as it highlights news reports in users’ feeds and aims to attract more users with what Zuckerberg describes as a “video first” strategy.
