Scherzer leads baseball with a 0.92 WHIP and was already considered Washington’s ace even before the Strasburg injury.

After being pulled prematurely from Wednesday’s start, Stephen Strasburg was immediately scheduled for an MRI. Lessard explained the past soreness, which Strasburg said he began to feel at the All-Star break, was from swelling in the back of Strasburg’s elbow.

The 24-year-old Cotton became the fourth pitcher in big league history born in the Virgin Islands.

Syndergaard (13-8) gave up six hits and four walks. His status moving forward will depend on how his elbow reacts over the next four to five days.

Strasburg exited Wednesday night’s start, his first since returning from the disabled list, in the third inning after just 42 pitches.

Rookies A.J. Cole (who starts tonight against the Phillies), Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo Lopez weren’t expected to hold significant roles down the stretch and into October, but Baker mentioned all three as candidates to step up given the situation.

BREWERS 2, CUBS 1: Jonathan Villar hit two home runs and Keon Broxton robbed Anthony Rizzo of a homer in the ninth inning to help Milwaukee beat Chicago. “He said he felt fine, but a lot of times you really don’t know until you get into the action”.

“He didn’t stick around because he’s just both frustrated and upset”, Baker said. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of an “upper back strain” earlier in the season before having his two elbow issues. He made four minor league appearances beginning in late August and his suspension ended September 4. “There’s nothing I can do but come up here and pitch now”.

Nationals: The team reinstated INF Stephen Drew, who missed 40 games due to vertigo-like symptoms. Daniel Murphy hit a sacrifice fly to the warning track and Bryce Harper struck out.

Kenley Jansen pitched the ninth for his 43rd save in 49 chances.

Murphy picked up his 40th double of the season, matching his career high.

Strasburg is 2-1 with a 4.26 ERA in three starts against Atlanta this season.

Nationals head athletic trainer Paul Lessard addressed the media Thursday to discuss the results of Strasburg’s MRI. “It’s not a season-ending injury, but we still need to take time that he’s nice and strong because of his past”. He said his changeup was outstanding, and he had good command.
