Kerber beats Wozniacki to reach US Open final

Karolina Pliskova, of the Czech Republic, returns a shot to Serena Williams during the semifinals of the U.S. Open tennis tournament, Thursday, Sept. 8, 2016, in NY.

It was for the second consecutive year when Serena saw her bid for a seventh U.S. Open title halted in the semi-finals.

With Serena Williams stunned in the last round, Kerber stepped onto Arthur Ashe Stadium as the provisional WTA World No.1 – she’ll assume the top spot when the new rankings are released on Monday.

“Yeah, I have been having some serious left knee problems”, said Williams. Even when she was a set down and break she was still fighting. Pliskova saved a match point against Venus in the round of 16 before prevailing 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3). “Final or first round, it’s the same”, Mouratoglou said.

“I was making errors that I never make, and definitely I didn’t make in this tournament in particular”, said Williams. Tops seeds Kristina Mladenovic and Caroline Garcia of France will play in the women’s doubles final Saturday against American Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic, the 12th seeds.

It was a brief respite as she then broke for the fifth time in the match to march into a third Grand Slam final of the year.

Pliskova came into the match on a 10 match winning streak, dating back to a title run in Cincinnati at last month’s Western & Southern Open. “Fatigue had absolutely nothing to do with it. I think she’s proud of me to be the next one after her”.

“It’s just incredible. It’s a great day”, Kerber said in the on-court interview after her semifinal victory.

So dominating was Pliskova that 50 minutes and 13 games elapsed before she faced a break point. The errors, though, came in crucial points, with Serena blaming her failure to take her opportunities on a knee injury, which, according to the player, was suffered in the second round of the tournament.

Karolina Pliskova revelled in the “dream” of reaching the US Open final, but feels she still has one step to go after upsetting Serena Williams. The Czech star has never gone past the third round of a major tournament before and insists Williams’ injury should not take the gloss off her achievement. “I will try to give my best, go out to enjoy my first final and try to win the match”. So I definitely wasn’t exhausted from yesterday’s match at all.

He said she spent far less time than usual warming up for the match, after getting treatment much of the day.

“I don’t care”, Pliskova said. In the other semifinal, Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber beat Caroline Wozniacki 6-4 6-3 to reach her first US Open final. Ultimately, that was her responsibility – she asked the USTA to schedule her first match for last Tuesday, which meant playing the quarterfinals and semifinals on successive nights.

Williams didn’t want to talk about losing the No. 1 ranking but if she wants it back, she will be buoyed by knowing she has no points to defend until the season concludes.

Pliskova raced out to a 3-0 lead in the tiebreak though Williams won the ensuing three points.
