Pulis: I didn’t want the players West Brom have signed

A game containing less than three strikes looks the most likely on the back of those numbers, especially as only Arsenal and Manchester United have kept more clean sheets than West Brom in the Premier League since January a year ago. “I’m pleased the window is closed and we can all concentrate on the results”. He scored nine goals for West Brom in 61 appearances over the course of three seasons, though his playing time generally in the last few years has been limited mainly to substitute appearances.

The additions of Matt Philipps, Nacer Chadli, Allan Nyom and Hal Robson-Kanu are not likely to be enough to do anything more than keep West Brom in the top-flight and the growing tension between Pulis and the new ownership makes a change of manager appear inevitable.

Eddie Howe has credited West Brom boss Tony Pulis with having a telling influence on his career nearly 25 years after they first met at Bournemouth.

West Brom have had eight goalless draws in the Premier League since Pulis took charge in January 2015 – more than any other team.

Howe added: “He was so involved with the football club then as manager of Bournemouth in all aspects”. This is unlikely to happen with the style of play that Pulis prefers.

West Bromwich Albion fans can sense what’s coming.

“The five players that John has said I was happy with, they weren’t the marquee players I wanted to bring in”, Pulis said.

The striker is yet to score this season and Pulis said: “Saido now has a point to prove”.

It followed news of the collapse, for “footballing reasons” according to Williams, of a club-record deal for a defensive midfielder who was understood to be Malaga’s Ignacio Camacho.

Trialists Marouane Chamakh and Momo Sissoko have, as yet, not been signed on a permanent basis, so the former Stoke manager will travel south without the number of new faces that he would have hoped for. The Belgium worldwide was used on the left wing for most of his spell at White Hart Lane, but is likely to be given a more central berth under Pulis, playing just behind Rondon. Not only will Chadli be able to provide some guile and creativity in the final third, he will also ease the goalscoring burden on the duo. The teams’ four combined strikes across the opening three matchdays is five less than league-leading Manchester City have managed on their own and only the Eagles have notched less. He also has the work-rate to play on the left of midfield in a 4-4-2 if West Brom want to play both Berahino and Rondon. If the poor form and performances continue, the pressure on Pulis may become overwhelming.
