Labour party rebuts claims of purge of Corbyn supporters

A party spokeswoman said Labour had “a robust validation process for all votes in this year’s leadership contest to ensure every vote cast is eligible according to the party’s rules and agreed procedures”.

The Opposition leader had claimed the train service was “ram-packed” and hit back against Virgin Trains’ suggestions.

Corbyn’s spokesman also said any move to restore annual shadow cabinet elections should be “part of the wider debate about party democratisation and reform”.

Corbyn, who is entering the final stretch of the Labour leadership race with polls showing he continues to enjoy a healthy lead over rival Owen Smith, will today launch the new environment manifesto at an event in Nottingham.

The party leader is “more interested in deepening the divides within the party than winning elections”, according to his challenger.

Bookmaker William Hill has said Corbyn, who nearly secured 60% of the vote in 2015, is now a “virtually unbackable” favourite to win the contest, with odds of 1/25 (96% chance of victory).

“The squabbles have made the party look unelectable and both of you look unelectable”, an audience member said.

The Daily Telegraph later unearthed footage of Mr Corbyn in 2014 calling for North Atlantic Treaty Organisation to “give up, go home and go away” at a rally in Newport.

Theresa May has come under fire for quoting an outspoken Twitter user during an attack on Jeremy Corbyn at Prime Minister’s Questions.

Labour MPs, the majority of whom are hoping Mr Corbyn’s leadership is in its final weeks, watched baffled as the leader of the opposition failed to ask a single question about the biggest change facing the United Kingdom in a generation.

Jeremy Corbyn’s critics have claimed his re-election as Labour leader would leave a generation without homes and millions without power.

Meanwhile, Mr Smith restated his wish for a second European Union referendum, and said he wanted Labour to promise at the 2020 general election to take Britain back into the EU.

More than 50 members of the shadow cabinet walked out on Mr Corbyn in the wake of the Brexit vote.

Mr Smith said: “Jeremy is the disunity candidate in this contest”.

“I have to say the first one was quite good”. Some of the people around Jeremy are encouraging it. Corbyn said he was not campaigning about the Queen but democracy, while Smith said he supported the current system.

That’s not the leadership the Labour party needs – it’s not leadership at all.
