David Moyes challenges Victor Anichebe to prove his worth

Since then, he has also brought in two more signings, with ex-Everton and West Brom striker Victor Anichebe arriving as a free agent, while Federation Internationale de Football Association granted Sunderland permission to sign goalkeeper Mika from Boavista outside the window after a delay completing the paperwork at the Portuguese end meant that deal could not be completed on deadline day.

But Moyes is convinced he still has much to offer on Wearside, providing he gets himself in shape.

Moyes had Anichebe at Everton from 2006-13, where the powerful and pacy frontman scored 18 goals in 131 appearances and the manager believes there is untapped potential in a player still only 28.

He said: “I would like to get back to the Victor I know who at times can be unplayable”.

“He is here for one year, which keeps him on a short leash, and show people what he can really be”.

“Hopefully we can get him in a condition so that when he is needed, he can come on and make an impact”.

“He will give us something else”.

“And also, we couldn’t get a centre-forward in during the window so we have signed Victor”.

“I know what he can bring, if he can get his mind right and get physically right, this is a great opportunity to show what he can do”.

Sunderland’s squad remains thinnest up front, now that Fabio Borini (thigh) has been sidelined.

Now Moyes is hoping he can get the man who burst on to the scene as a teenage powerhouse at Goodison Park back in business after taking a chance on him.

Javier Manquillo has backed David Moyes to help him become a Premier League star after his Liverpool snub.

“But the window has shut now and I’m glad about that because I can now get out on the grass with the players, and try to mould them as a team”.

‘I think every manager will be the same situation though’.
