Florida politicians urge use of Intrexon GM mosquitoes for Zika
A Florida Republican exhausted of inaction on the Zika crisis attempt to scare his colleagues into passing a bill by bringing a jar of mosquitos from his home state.

Rep. David Jolly (R-Fla.) held up the jar of mosquitoes – which he noted are not actively carrying the virus – as he delivered a morning speech on the floor.
“This is the reason for the urgency”, Jolly said.
The World Health Organization said on Tuesday that men and women returning from areas where the Zika virus is actively spreading should practice safer sex or abstinence for 6 months, regardless of whether they are trying to conceive or showing symptoms.
“Can you imagine the fear if these mosquitoes were outside the jar and not inside it?” he says.
“We ask you to stand by the people of Florida in our time of need and use your legal authority to grant us access to a new source of hope in the fight against the spread of this bad virus”, the letter says.
“Currently, there is no confirmation that these mosquitoes are transmitting any of these viruses to people”.
Maybe it would help if Jolly could convince his own party to stop tying funding to help Zika to defunding Planned Parenthood.
“Now, they are not active carriers, but they could be”, Jolly warned.
Senate Democrats blocked a $1.1 billion bill over objections to a provision aimed at preventing funding to Planned Parenthood (Zika can be transmitted sexually).
He brought them to the House to criticise Congress for failing to pass legislation to combat the mosquito-borne Zika virus in the Sunshine State. Members of Congress would run down the hall to the physicians office to be tested, they would spray themselves before coming down here.
The WHO said the update was based on new evidence on Zika transmission from asymptomatic males to their female partners and a symptomatic female to her male partner, as well as evidence that Zika is present in semen for longer than thought. “This is the fear of Floridians”.
House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., criticized Senate Democrats’ vote Wednesday, calling on them to “drop” the politics.
Jolly said Floridians are angry.

The administration asked people planning to travel to 58 countries and regions hit by the virus to take measures to avoid mosquito bites-such as wearing light-colored, long-sleeve shirts and long pants and using mosquito repellent and nets while sleeping. He faces a tough reelection campaign against former Governor Charlie Crist, a Republican-cum-Democrat.
