Publishers can charge for PS4 Pro upgrade patches — Sony exec

For the 4K HDR patch for existing titles, will it cost money? Or will it be free?

Ito: It will be different for each title. This Friday Sony Interactive Entertainment executive Masayasu Ito has confirmed that this will go on a game-by-game basis and that some of them won’t be free. I believe it will depend on the thinking of each licensee. Some games will be updated for free, while others will require players to pay a fee for forthcoming software patches. We’ve asked Sony to clarify whether that applies only to games published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, and will update when we hear back.

Ito: I think it will vary for each one of our titles.

Ito: Right. The first party titles we put out are going to certainly support both [4K and HDR].

At that point, Ito was referring to third-party publishers. Announced this week at PlayStation Meeting 2016, PlayStation 4 Pro is a high-end version of the current PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Slim with more horsepower under the hood to fuel 4K and HDR gaming. The console additionally offers support for high-dynamic range color and 4K resolution, though Sony declined to include a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray drive as part of the package.
