Berger won the job after filling in past year for former starter John Sullivan, who missed all of 2015 with a back injury.

The Vikings released John Sullivan in August, leaving Joe Berger as the victor of the competition for the starting center job in 2016.

Before joining the Vikings, Berger was a 2006 sixth-round selection from Michigan Tech and bounced around from the Carolina Panthers, Miami Dolphins, and Dallas Cowboys. The 34-year-old veteran was Pro Football Focus’ highest-rated center in 2015. The new deal keeps him locked up through the 2017 season. Sparano’s history with Berger, coupled with Sullivan’s age and questionable health, likely led Minnesota to commit so much to Berger. He was cut in training camp, after the Vikings made a decision to go with Berger as their starter at center. Easton was ruled out of Sunday’s Week 1 game with an ankle injury.
