Rio Paralympic: Nigeria Wins First Medal

Reports say Roland Ezuruike won the men’s 54kg event with a record breaking 190kg to hand Nigeria her first gold medal at the ongoing tournament in Brazil.

She lifted 101 Kg to temporarily hold the Paralympic record before eventual gold medalist China’s Dandan Hu lifted 102 to break her record.

Nigeria is poised to repeat her feat at the London 2012 Paralympics in the powerlifting event, after winning four gold and one silver at the competition. Also 12 officials, including coaches, medical personnel, helpers, loaders and team administrators, accompanied the team.

The 23 athletes from the country are participating in the Games.
