The paper said at least 10 people were killed and 20 injured, citing hospital sources. Ten of the injured are struggling for life with critical burn wounds, they said.

Tongi hospital’s Resident Doctor Md Parvez Mia said two burnt and mutilated bodies were first brought to the hospital from the factory.

“The fire is still not under control”, police inspector Sirajul Islam told AFP.

The fire erupted after a boiler of Tempako Packaging Factory blasted at 6:15am in Bisic industrial area of Tongi, said Gazipur Fire Service and Civil Defence Deputy Assistant Director Akhtaruzzaman.

Trying to explain why the blaze spread so fast, Tahmidul Islam of Bangladesh’s Industrial Police Unit said chemicals may have been stored on the ground floor of the factory.

About 100 people are believed to have been working at the building when flames tore through the four-storey factory following the explosion.
