After four years of waiting for that “fucking re-ride” – to borrow one of Cundy’s phrases back on the extraordinary evening when his hopes were dashed in front of his home crowd – the ParalympicsGB cyclist was in scintillating form in the Rio Velodrome, finally winning the gold medal that he felt should have been his at London 2012.
Clegg thought she had set a world record of 11.91 seconds, but officials determined that guide Chris Clark dragged her in the race, contrary to regulations.
After joining the British para-cycling development programme, the 30-year-old won three silvers in London. His time of 1min 04.733sec was not enough.
JODY CUNDY slayed the demons of London 2012 by destroying his opposition to win Paralympic gold last night, writes Alex Spink in Rio.
“All I wanted to do was get out of the gate”, he said.
But the pair joked even the gold was not Thornhill’s highlight of the day – that was receiving a good luck tweet from her beloved Manchester United.
Put to her that she could soon be a pitchside guest at Old Trafford, Thornhill said: “I could die after that”. “My life is complete!” she said.
Jessica Gallagher finished in a time of 1:08.171 alongside Maddie Janssen, with the bronze seeing her become the first Australian to win a medal at the Summer and Winter Paralympic Games.
Most satisfying of all, he won in style.
It was one of SEVEN gold medals won by Britain yesterday – including one for London hero Jonnie Peacock – and brought Cundy the redemption he craved.
Scott, who is 26 and from Halesowen, added: “We’ve always had a fast opening 500m, so we knew if we got out quicker than anybody else it would mean they would have to work double hard to try to catch us”.
The 32-year-old finished two seconds clear of Canada’s Tristen Chernove, winning the gold medal in a time of 3:44.553.
There was a gold for Jason Smyth – his third in succession – in the T13 100 metres on the athletics track.
Robinson, who was inspired by Ellie Simmonds, now her team-mate, triumphed in 35.58 seconds, a Paralympic record.
