Miami’s Josh Richardson partially tears MCL

Miami Heat guard/forward Josh Richardson suffered a partially torn MCL in his right knee.

Richardson suited up for the Heat’s Summer League team after being taken with the 40th overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. He averaged 6.6 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game, while recording a.569 true shooting percentage.

Basically in terms of knee injuries it’s the best thing that could have happened to Richardson because his ligament is only partially torn.

“I played more than I expected going into this year”, Richardson said in May, per the Miami Herald’s Manny Navarro.

Not only did they sign Dion Waiters-who can slide in and start for Richardson in a pinch-but combo guard Tyler Johnson emerged as a breakout player last season and was signed to a four-year, $50 million deal. But if Richardson is not ready to start the regular season against the Magic on October 26, it will be up to Ellington, Johnson and Waiters to fill in for Wade at shooting guard.

Following a promising rookie season, Richardson, 22, was expected to compete for the Heat’s starting shooting guard position in training camp after the departure of Dwyane Wade to Chicago. He saw his playing time increase down the stretch as injuries riddled the Heat roster, yet Richardson became a strength, draining 46.1 percent of his three-pointers in 21.3 minutes per game.
