Drew Brees, Saints ‘relatively close’ on extension

Brees’ deal appears created to give the Saints the financial flexibility to bring him more help in the coming seasons as he and coach Sean Payton, who earlier this year also agreed to an extension in New Orleans through 2020, try to make another run at a Super Bowl.

The deal will be announced as a five-year extension, but reportedly contains an automatic void to two years, according to ESPN’s Ed Werder.

Brees is now in the final year of a 5-year $100 million contract that at the time made him the highest paid player in the history of the NFL.

What’s most important for the Bucs is that Brees will be in New Orleans in 2018, too, guaranteeing that they’ll have to find a way to stop him.

In addition to his statistical feats, Brees has earned a 6-4 record in his five playoff appearances with New Orleans, including a Super Bowl victory over the Indianapolis Colts at the conclusion of the 2009 season.

His decade in New Orleans has been the most prolific run of any quarterback in National Football League history. The 15 year pro has said that he would not negotiate any contract extensions with the Saints beyond the start of the regular season.

“Both sides are very happy”. “But this is what was in the best interest of the team”.

Second, he got to shelve the distraction of all this contract talk in time to focus on the 2016 season and Sunday’s opener with the Oakland Raiders. “I’ll be here as long as they’ll have me”.

So, Drew, considering the way things have gone and figure to continue, I would say that after another 7-9 or 8-8 season in 2017, go forth and prosper for another team.

“I think that’s part of the training that we do together, is making sure that I can sustain at the level that I want to be at, playing at a high level for really as long as I want to do it”, Brees said in June. “I like our team”. Certainly, I am. I’m very happy.

It’s great that Brees now has what amounts to a fully guaranteed two-year, $44.25 million deal with additional contractual perks.

And for now, that’s at least two more years, which guarantees Breesus will be around the Big Easy until he’s 39. And his agent and lawyer cost him millions by not telling him to meet with well-meaning police in Baton Rouge to clear his name before the draft – not after.

One of the NFL’s most prolific passers, Brees has thrown for 60,903 yards and 428 touchdowns in his career.
