Korea nuclear test may be a bit of both

Aside from these nuclear tests, North Korea has been developing a missile program over the past few decades, which has grown from artillery rockets to short- and medium-range ballistic missiles.

“The United States condemns North Korea’s September 9 nuclear test in the strongest possible terms as a grave threat to regional security and to global peace and stability”, he said.

Trump has also proposed withdrawing some USA troops from Asia and has said that Japan and South Korea, two strong US allies, should develop their own nuclear capabilities to deal with North Korea, rather than continue to rely on the United States to protect them.

“The 10-kiloton blast was almost twice the (power of the) fourth nuclear test and slightly less than the Hiroshima bombing, which was measured about 15 kilotons”, said Kim Nam-Wook of the South’s meteorological agency.

North Korea has been hit by five sets of United Nations sanctions since it first tested a nuclear device in 2006.

“If previous tests were conducted with the goal of acquiring the nuclear bomb, the newest test shows that the North finally owns a real, weaponized nuclear bomb”, Kim said.

Known to be one of the world’s most secretive countries, North Korea has, in the past, actively carried out nuclear and missile tests much to the anger of South Korea and other world powers.

“They’ve been demonstrating not just the ability to cause a nuclear detonation, but to mount it and turn it into a weapon”, said John Delury, an assistant professor of East Asian studies at Yonsei University in South Korea.

South Korean President Park Geun-hye, in Laos after a summit of Asian leaders ended there on Thursday, said it was a nuclear test, her office said.

“The worldwide community, the UN Security Council and especially the other six-party powers must hold North Korea accountable for this latest act and heighten the pressure on North Korea especially through tightening of sanctions commensurate with the gravity of this act”, he said.

Carter said the nuclear test would strengthen resolve to bolster defences in South Korea, including deployment of US THAAD anti-missile units and radars.

UN Chief Ban Ki-moon has asked the council to stay united on the issue and take collective action that would “urgently break this accelerating spiral of escalation, “Reuters reported. We must lodge a strong protest”, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said”.

Whatever the state of the program, one thing is clear: The fifth test was the most powerful to date.

A large natural disaster has been detected in North Korea amid reports that the country’s regime had been planning a nucler bomb test.

Some outsiders were struck by the name of the agency that announced the nuclear test, something called the Nuclear Weapons Institute, which hasn’t appeared previously in North Korean media.

North Korea claims to have tested a hydrogen bomb, though the USA and others weren’t so sure.

“The recklessness of North Korea puts the world’s peace at risk”, he said.

President Park also spoke with U.S. President Barack Obama on the phone for about 15 minutes, less than four hours after the confirmed launch.
