Super Mario is surely one of the most popular games ever created, and it seems that a version of it will come to mobile phones.

Yes, in an unexpected moment, Shigeru Miyamoto himself took the stage in the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium and announced Super Mario Run, a new mobile platformer starring Nintendo’s plucky mascot. Mario runs automatically and taps control his jump, with the length of the tap determining its height. According to Nintendo, you can play Super Mario Run with one hand standing in the subway or while eating an apple. Fortunately for Android users, Nintendo has cleared the air, stating that Super Mario Run will be coming to their device of choice.

Miyamoto also announced a set of new Super Mario stickers will be added to iMessage in the next major iOS software update to help celebrate the release.

The goal of the game is simple: collect coins and reach the flagpole.

Nintendo said it would launch the game initially on Apple’s App Store in December. By tapping, the auto-running Mario will jump.

There will also be an interactive competitive mode, where players can challenge others’ high scores.

Nintendo rather said it would be on iOS first, and now, Kotaku has obtained confirmation from Nintendo that the game will indeed be coming to Android in the future…
