Mario’s team-up with Apple sends Nintendo stock soaring

Nintendo didn’t say anything during its presentation-a move that makes sense given that it was an Apple Event-but it confirmed afterwards that Super Mario Run would also make the jump to Apple’s main rival.

Nintendo said it would launch the game initially on Apple’s App Store in December. “We do intend to release the game on Android devices at some point in the future”, a Nintendo spokesperson told Kotaku.

In terms of actual gameplay, Super Mario Run uses the same graphical style as the New Super Mario Bros. games.

One of the biggest surprises from Apple’s September 7 event was the announcement that Mario is coming to the iPhone.

Super Mario Run is an endless runner featuring familiar Mario stages, characters and mechanics in which players attempt to clear stages while collecting as many coins as possible.

Think “Flappy Bird”, but Super Mario and the standard Super Mario levels you’re used to – lava and question mark blocks and what have you. Mario will run automatically on his own, Miyamoto demonstrated. The longer you tap, the higher he jumps, which will be key in getting high scores.

This will be the first Super Mario game for smartphones. Well yes and no, because although the app will be free to download you won’t be able to play it full.

Within the app, you’ll also find a Battle Mode called Toad Rally.

The game will be broken down into the trademark Mario obstacle courses, each with a flagpole marking the end. “More details will be disclosed at a later date”, said the firm.

Nintendo will charge a set fee for Super Mario Run, rather than annoying players with in-app purchases.
