Congress to allow unencumbered Zika funding vote

Senate Republican John Cornyn of Texas told Politico in an interview that a standoff over Planned Parenthood is “not the goal”.

Democrats have blocked the Zika bill three times in the Senate due to their objection to Republican provisions in the bill, among them a ban on Planned Parenthood using any of the funds. A 52-46 vote to advance the money fell short of the 60 votes needed as Democrats opposed provisions blocking Zika prevention and treatment money from going to Planned Parenthood clinics in Puerto Rico.

The bill’s text does not actually mention Planned Parenthood, something Republicans have seized on when accusing Democrats of politicizing the issue.

House Republicans are meeting Friday and say they believe they can get this funding through by the end of the month.

Lawmakers have been deadlocked for months over a $1.1 billion funding bill.

“Republicans continue to play politics with this crisis”, said Rep. But Meadows acknowledged that he and some are open to something else if leaders agree to add a provision that would impose a “temporary pause” on refugees from Syria and other Mideast countries with terror ties to come to the United States. “I think they are just being wholly partisan with these endless filibusters”.

That idea will be a non-starter for Democrats.

“It was an agreed-upon issue between the House and Senate and, unfortunately, the Senate Democrats blocked it”, U.S. Sen.

The deadline to avoid a shutdown: September 30.

“Give me a break on this one”.

House Appropriations Committee Chairman Hal Rogers has said he supports a similar approach as McConnell’s – a bill through some time in December – and said that there are some discussions about attaching Zika money to the must-pass bill, although no decisions have been made.

“Speaker Ryan, please bring a clean bill to the floor”, said Rep. Frederica Wilson (D, Florida).

If Planned Parenthood doesn’t get paid, Shaheen won’t let the Senate send the Zika bill to President Obama.

Since then, both parties have backed $1.1 billion as the funding figure.

After House Republicans met privately Wednesday for the first time since Congress returned from summer recess, leaders said GOP lawmakers would meet again next week to discuss their next steps on Koskinen’s impeachment.
