America’s Serena Williams lost the women’s singles world number one rank after a record 186 weeks, following her US Open semi-final defeat to Czech Karolina Pliskova on Thursday.

Angelique Kerber, of Germany, returns a shot to Caroline Wozniacki, of Denmark, during the semifinals of the U.S. Open tennis tournament, Thursday, Sept. 8, 2016, in NY. “I was actually really exhausted because I came from Rio and I had a lot of tough matches there”.

Karolina Pliskova dominated the first set against Serena Williams to take a surprising lead in their U.S. Open semifinal.

The Orlando site has dozens of courts — including European red clay, green clay, indoor, outdoor hard courts like those used at the U.S. Open — as well as housing for junior players.

She was tied with tennis icon Steffi Graf for the record of Grand Slam victories at 22, Williams was looking to beat that record and win her 23rd at the 2016 U.S Open.

So while there is still a lot on the line, of course — millions of dollars, a major trophy — Kerber does not have to deal with the pressure of trying to ascend to No. 1.

Surprises tennis world by playing superb defence to win her first grand slam title, the first by a German since Steffi Graf in 1999, with a 6-4 3-6 6-4 win over Serena Williams. “I was trying to not think too much the whole last few weeks about this, and now I reach it”.

“(Here) I can really prepare for the final against Pliskova.

“For me starts everything here like 2011”, Kerber said.

The 28-year-old’s victory ensures her spot in an incredible third grand slam final of the year, having won her maiden grand slam at the Australian Open, while losing to Williams in the Wimbledon finale.

Speaking to on-court interviewer Pam Shriver after defeating Serena, the Czech said she didn’t “believe” what she had accomplished before adding, “Actually I do believe it”. She gets good angles.

Player and coach also differed on when Williams was initially hurt: He said it was a new injury that occurred late in her quarterfinal, while she said it first bothered her earlier in the tournament. “I know that I can do this, I’m practicing it a lot”. It’s a huge thing. Pliskova sat in her changeover seat, leaned back and exhaled.

Kerber earned her first career No. 1 ranking before she even stepped on court Thursday with Serena Williams’ loss in the first semifinal.

After the match, she revealed she had been nursing a problem with her left knee in NY since round two.

The “next time” has arrived, with a grand slam crown now at stake.

With two match points at 5-3, 15-40 in the ninth game of the second set, Williams missed a couple of backhands to make it 40-40, lost the game on a wide forehand, and would go on to drop 13 of 15 points, as Hingis came within a point of winning the set at 7-5 in Game 12.

Beats Caroline Wozniacki to clinch her second title in Copenhagen and also makes finals at Eastbourne and Cincinnatti.

Pliskova serves well, leading the tour in aces this season, and her angled offerings gave Williams fits.

The 5-foot-8 Kerber, meanwhile, is terrific at retrieving and counter-punching, dropping down to a knee at times along the baseline to get balls back. “So I think I wasn’t at 100 percent, but I also think she played well. But after the match I would say it’s still her choice if she wants to play”. My mind was just a little bit everywhere. If you would like to discuss another topic, look for a relevant article.
