That’s what happened Thursday night, but it somehow got buried in the avalanche of talk about the hits on Newton.

The NFL has had this problem in how the rules inconsistently protect mobile quarterbacks for years, and it is a significant challenge because the size and athleticism of Newton is a game-changer and the Panthers deploy him in a way that subjects his body to punishment when he decides to take off and run with the ball.
The hits on Newton didn’t necessarily take away the focus from the collapse of the offensive line, which led to the hits.
And then the season started on Thursday night, and it was business as usual.
“We hear (what) everybody says about us being dirty, but we’re not going to stop being aggressive”, Stewart said.
Which brings us to another issue – the referees.
