France Urges New UN Sanctions Resolution On North Korea

Gerard von Bohemen, New Zealand’s Ambassador to the United Nations, announced after presiding over an emergency meeting of the Security Council in NY on Friday “appropriate measures” aimed at Pyongyang were being developed.

In February, he appeared to suggest the assassination of North Korean president Kim Jong Un, telling “CBS This Morning” that he “would get China to make that guy disappear in one form or another very quickly”.

Cha says data that CSIS has collected make it clear the 45th US president will be dealing with Pyongyang sooner rather than later.

It may indicate North Korea feels it can confidently build miniaturized warheads, mass-produce those weapons and then deploy them on ballistic missiles.

“The members of the Security Council strongly condemned this test, which is a clear violation and in flagrant disregard” of past council resolutions banning nuclear tests or the use of ballistic missile technology by the country, the statement said. Alongside the nuclear test, the North Korean military has sent a number of projectiles and missiles into the sea since March and kept up its anti-American and anti-South Korean rhetoric.

Trump lay the blame of the North Korea’s test squarely at Clinton’s and feet saying at the Values Voters Summit on Friday that it was “one more massive failure from a failed secretary of state”.

State television in North Korea said the successful test meant the country could produce “a variety of smaller, lighter and diversified nuclear warheads of higher strike power at will”. North Korea and Iran are our biggest threats right now in terms of missile technology.

Whether the North’s announcement of its test is simply the same mixture of boast, threat and propaganda that characterizes much of what North Korea chooses to show in its tightly controlled state media, or a major nuclear advancement, the picture that the North paints for the world may be as important as what actually happened.

“It’s pretty incredible that we’ve come this far since the first nuclear crisis back in 1994”, says Hahm Chaibong, head of the Asan Institute for Policy Studies, a Seoul-based independent think tank.

It’s uncertain whether Kim Jong Un was just flexing his muscles to prove he has more nuclear capability than the world previously thought, or whether it’s something more, he said.

But North Korea has vowed to pursue both nuclear and economic development.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has condemned North Korea’s fifth nuclear test as a “brazen breach” of United Nations resolutions and is urging the Security Council “to unite and take urgent actions”.

While she was secretary of state, North Korea broke off worldwide talks aimed at ending its nuclear program and violated United Nations bans on testing long-range missiles and nuclear weapons.

Estimates vary, but North Korea may have about 40 kilograms (88 pounds) of weapons-grade plutonium, according to a 2014 South Korean report, which is enough for about seven atomic bombs.
