Hermine spares much of US East Coast but dampens holiday
In the ship’s restaurants, dishes were “going all over the place”, Beidermann said.

A handful of people came out to the beach near the famous Steel Pier amusement park, mostly to look at the rough seas. “Half the ship is in the room right now over the toilet”, Beidermann said.
On Sunday afternoon, he said a few homes still lacked power.
Royal Caribbean said in a statement Sunday the ship was continuing to sail “safely to Bermuda”. Earlier today, our captain informed guests that we had experienced higher winds and gusts for a 2-3 hour period.
The storm has claimed at least three lives, in Florida and in North and SC.
Hermine (her-MEEN) caused two deaths, damaged properties, closed beaches as far north as NY, and left hundreds of thousands without electricity from Florida to Virginia.
The city was spared Hermine – but Monday was still no day at the beach.
“Just because it’s a post-tropical cyclone doesn’t mean the impact of tropical force winds, winds in general and storm surge go away”, cautioned National Hurricane Center spokesman Dennis Feltgen.
A beachgoer stands at the edge of the water, Sunday, Sept. 4, 2016, in Bridgehampton, N.Y., on the southeastern shore of Long Island, where the effects of storm system Hermine could be seen in the rough surf and a ban on swimming.
The storm, which crossed northern Florida and then moved up the Georgia and the Carolina coasts, was packing sustained surface winds of up to 70 miles per hour with higher gusts, the National Weather Service said.
For now, its strongest winds were extending outward by about 230 miles, failing to reach USA shores.
Hurricane Newton had weakened on Tuesday afternoon and was expected to make a second landfall on Mexico’s mainland as a tropical storm.
Hermine was classified as a Category 1 hurricane when it slammed into Florida’s Gulf Coast on Friday. Ellerbe said that other than for numerous fallen trees and downed power lines, the damage was minimal, given the storm’s size, intensity and expected impact. Hermine has also been blamed for some flooding along the coast, despite the storm’s diminished state.
The city’s shores were closed to swimmers and surfers for the second day in a row because of strong rip tides and waves caused by the tropical storm, nixing any chance of a final dip in the ocean before the summer season ended.

White, along with Bill Tromm, head of Beach Haven’s Emergency Operations Center, attended a briefing on the storm at the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department Office of Emergency Management in Berkeley Township Sunday night. Chris Christie of New Jersey, who on Saturday declared emergencies for three counties.
