Old issues resurface as NFL season opens

Denver’s win over Carolina 21-20 with the nail biting field goal at the end that went wide left on Graham Gano, and the 10 point deficit comeback the Broncos over came; as fantastic as the game was as a whole, one aspect which cannot be shaken from social media nor ESPN, were the hits Cam Newton took to the helmet. Stewart landed a hard helmet-to-helmet head shot that left Newton sprawling on the ground, dazed. The NFL also drew fire because Newton was not put into concussion protocol during the game, but the league said in a statement Friday that it had followed all of the proper medical procedures. Because trying to tackle Newton is such a daunting task, defenders have to be extra physical with the Panthers QB.

“If the league is going to be married to concussion protocol, first of all, start it with the officials because they mandate behavior on the field”, Cecil Newton said. The severity could be debated, and Newton may have been able to function, but even what could be called “getting your bell rung” fits the bill for a concussion.

The NFL already determined that Marshall should’ve been penalized for his second hit to Newton’s head after the quarterback had thrown a pass, according to a person speaking to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the league doesn’t comment publicly on the details of such reviews. That sentiment seems fairly obvious after the season opener, and Newton’s on-going durability is a concern. There’s no question his helmet made contact with Newton’s helmet, and if it had been called for a penalty, the league would have been fine with it, the source said. “All of them he’s passed, ” Rivera said.

Seantrel Henderson has made a decision to drop plans to appeal the NFL’s four-game suspension even though his agent said the Bills right tackle was using marijuana for medicinal purposes to relieve the effects of Crohn’s disease.

Newton rose from the field very slowly after the last hit. They had a healthy roster, an elite quarterback, and great play-making.

That formula won the Broncos a Super Bowl in February, and it won them the first game of the 2016 season. When a player initiates a hit with the top of the helmet, leaves his feet to deliver a blow or levels a defenseless player, he is ejected from the game and has to sit out the first half of the next game as well.

“He’s a big guy, and I just think that they think sometimes, ‘Oh, he can take it, ‘” Rivera said.

Broncos’ head coach Gary Kubiak said of Siemian: “I have faith in the kid”.

“They asked me a couple of questions, but nothing too serious”, Newton said. “With two minutes left, man, and that rush get on him, you could tell then”. I really like this officiating crew.

Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall became the latest NFL player to kneel in protest during the National Anthem. “I mean, it is what it is, but I think he should be treated more like a running back most of the time because he runs the ball a lot”. “I’m not going to let one kick define who I am”.

But Newton, who goes by the nickname “Superman”, was more like Iron Man. “He’s the quarterback and you can’t account for that on defense”. The end-game hit on Newton was one of at least three hits to the head against him. “We’ve just got to find ways to put more drives together”. “We are not going to stop being aggressive”.
